The Ultimate Guide to Ribbons for Zebra Printers

1. The Golden Rule: Coated Side Out (CSO)
Zebra printers are designed to use ribbons wound Coated Side Out (CSO).

What this means: The ink is on the outside of the roll (like a roll of scotch tape).

The Test: Stick a piece of tape to the outside of the ribbon roll. If ink peels off, it is CSO.

Warning: If you buy a “Datamax style” ribbon (Coated Side In), it will not print on a Zebra machine. It will just spin blankly.
2. Choosing the Right Core Size

Industrial Printers (ZT410, ZT230, 105SL):

Core: 1 Inch (25.4mm) cardboard core.

Length: Typically 300m or 450m.

Desktop Printers (GK420t, ZD420, TLP2844):

Core: 0.5 Inch (12.7mm) plastic or cardboard core with notches.

Length: Typically 74m or 110m.
