Printing labels for a warm warehouse is easy. Printing labels that must survive a -40°C blast freezer or a damp refrigerated truck is a science.
In the food processing and pharmaceutical industries, “Cold Chain” integrity is everything. If a barcode smears due to condensation or scratches off due to frost, the product becomes untraceable—and unsellable.
At Only Imaging, we help global food brands solve this problem. The secret isn’t just the label material; it’s pairing it with the right Thermal Transfer Ribbon (TTR).
Here is why your current labels might be failing, and how to fix it.
Why do standard labels fail in the fridge?
It’s usually not the cold itself; it’s the moisture.
Condensation: When products move from a cold zone to a loading dock, water droplets form on the label. Standard Wax ribbons are not water-resistant; they will smudge instantly.
Frost Abrasion: In freezers, ice crystals form hard, sharp surfaces. As boxes slide against each other, the ice acts like sandpaper, scraping the ink off.
Wax Ribbons are great for shipping boxes, but they have low scratch resistance and poor moisture tolerance.
Result: You open the freezer, pick up a bag of frozen peas, and the “Best Before” date rubs off on your thumb. This is a compliance violation.
To ensure your barcodes remain scannable from the production line to the consumer’s freezer, you need a ribbon formulated for synthetic adhesion and moisture resistance.
Best For: Refrigerated goods, Chilled Meat, Dairy, Pre-packaged Vegetables.
Performance: Excellent resistance to condensation and smudging.
Substrate: Works perfectly on coated paper and synthetic paper (PP/PE) often used in cold storage.
Temperature Range: Can withstand temperatures down to -20°C after printing.
Best For: Deep Freeze (-40°C), Blast Freezing, Vacuum Packed Meat, Cryogenic Labs.
Performance: The ink bonds chemically with the plastic film label. It becomes part of the packaging. It is waterproof and scratch-proof against ice.
Substrate: Must be paired with PET, PP, or Polyester films.
Reference this guide to choose the right ribbon for your environment:
| Environment | Temperature | Recommended Ribbon | Recommended Label Material |
| Cool Room / Fridge | 0°C to 10°C | N809 Wax/Resin | Coated Paper / PP |
| Standard Freezer | -18°C to -5°C | N809 Wax/Resin | Synthetic Paper (Polypropylene) |
| Blast / Deep Freeze | -40°C and below | Resin Series | Polyester / PET Film |
Pro Tip: Always print the label at room temperature and allow the ink to “set” before moving the product into the freezer.
If you are labeling food, safety is non-negotiable. Even if the label is on the outside of the packaging, migration can occur.
Only Imaging ensures that all our ribbons used in the food industry are:
RoHS Compliant (No hazardous heavy metals).
REACH Compliant (Safe chemical usage).
ISEGA / FDA Approved raw materials (available upon request for specific Resin grades).
Don’t let a smudged expiration date ruin your brand’s reputation. Whether you are packaging ice cream or vaccines, the label must last as long as the product.
