95% of the thermal transfer ribbons sold worldwide are Black. It’s the industry standard.
But sometimes, Black isn’t enough.
Whether you are a luxury brand wanting a Gold logo on your packaging, or a warehouse manager implementing a visual Color-Coding system, Colored Thermal Transfer Ribbons are the solution.
At Only Imaging, we manufacture a full spectrum of colors—Red, Blue, Green, White, Silver, Gold, and more. However, printing in color comes with its own set of technical rules.
Here is how to use colored ribbons effectively without disrupting your operations.
In a busy warehouse, reading text takes time. Seeing color is instant. Many of our manufacturing clients use color coding for Quality Control:
Green Ribbon: “Passed / QC OK” labels.
Red Ribbon: “Rejected / Hold” labels.
Blue Ribbon: “Work in Progress” or specific manufacturing months. This visual cue reduces human error significantly.
If you are shipping D2C (Direct to Consumer), a standard white shipping label looks boring. Printing your logo in Metallic Gold or Corporate Blue on your shipping label elevates the unboxing experience instantly.
Chemical drum labeling (GHS standards) often requires red diamonds to indicate hazards. Using Red Resin ribbon allows you to print these warning symbols on demand without buying pre-printed two-color labels.
This is the #1 mistake we see with colored ribbons.
The Problem: Most standard barcode scanners use a Red Light (Laser or LED). The Physics: Red objects reflect red light. If you print a Red Barcode on a White Label, the scanner sees it as “White on White.” It effectively becomes invisible to the scanner.
Only Imaging Pro Tip: Never print barcodes in Red, Orange, or Yellow if you are using standard scanners. Use Blue, Green, or Black for barcodes. Use Red only for text, logos, or warning borders.
Just like black ribbons, colored ribbons come in all three performance grades. You don’t have to sacrifice durability for color.
Colored Wax: Best for color-coding cardboard boxes and paper tags. (Available in Red, Blue, Green).
Colored Wax/Resin (N-Series): Best for glossy paper and scratch resistance. Ideal for brand logos.
Colored Resin: Best for chemical labeling (Red GHS labels) or outdoor assets. (Available in White, Silver, and Red).
White Resin Ribbons are in high demand for printing on Clear (Transparent) Films or Black/Dark Labels.
Common uses:
Ingredient lists on clear cosmetic bottles.
Asset tracking on black electronic devices.
Opacity is Key: Cheap white ribbons often look gray or transparent. Only Imaging’s White Resin is formulated with high-opacity titanium dioxide pigments to ensure a bright, solid white print.
Colored ribbons are a powerful tool for efficiency and branding, but they require consistent manufacturing to ensure the color shade doesn’t change from batch to batch.
At Only Imaging, we keep stock of popular colors (Red, Blue, Green, White) and can even offer PMS Color Matching for large OEM orders.
