Printing on Security Labels: VOID & Destructible Vinyl

“Warranty Void If Removed.” We see this label on electronics, pharmaceuticals, and asset tags. These are Security Labels (Tamper-Evident).

There are two main types:

  1. VOID Polyester: When peeled, it leaves the word “VOID” on the surface.

  2. Destructible Vinyl: When peeled, it shatters into tiny fragments like an eggshell.

The Printing Challenge: These materials are often top-coated with special varnishes to make them tamper-proof.

  • The Problem: Standard wax ribbons often do not stick to these slick top-coats. The ink can be scratched off with a fingernail without triggering the tamper evidence!

  • The Risk: A fraudster can simply wipe off the serial number and print a new one.

The Solution: Scratch-Proof Resin

To make a truly secure label, the ink must be as permanent as the label itself. You need Only Imaging Durable Resin (SP-500).

  • Bonds to Top-Coats: It contains aggressive solvents that bite into the slick polyester/vinyl surface.

  • Smudge Resistance: Once printed, it cannot be wiped off with alcohol or acetone.

Printer Settings for Security Labels

  • Darkness: Usually needs to be higher (25-30) to force the resin into the material.

  • Speed: Slow down! Security materials are thick. Print at 2-4 IPS for best adhesion.

Conclusion: Secure the Ink, Not Just the Label

A security label with removable ink is useless. Test your ribbon scratch resistance immediately after printing. If it fails, switch to Only Imaging SP-500.
