So, you requested a sample roll from Only Imaging (or any other supplier). It arrived on your desk. Now what?
Most people just load it, print a few labels, look at it, and say “Okay, it’s black.”
This is a mistake.
To truly evaluate if a ribbon will survive your supply chain, you need to stress-test it. Here is the standard testing protocol we use in our lab, which you can replicate in your warehouse.
Goal: Check if the ink bonds well to your specific label material.
Method: Print a barcode. Press a piece of clear Scotch tape firmly over the print. Rip it off quickly.
Pass: The ink stays on the label.
Fail: The ink lifts off with the tape. (This means you need a higher-resin formula).
Goal: Simulate friction during shipping.
Method: Place the printed label on a flat surface. Scratch the barcode vigorously with your thumbnail 10 times.
Pass: The barcode is still scannable.
Fail: The ink flakes off, leaving white streaks.
Goal: Check for print sharpness and opacity.
Method: Hold the label up to a bright light.
Pass: The black bars are solid and block the light.
Fail: You see “pinholes” or grey areas inside the black bars.
Goal: Will the label survive a hot truck in summer?
Method: Use a heat gun or a hair dryer on high. Blow hot air on the label for 10 seconds.
Pass: The image remains stable.
Fail: The image turns entirely black (thermal paper reaction) or the ink melts and smears.
Don’t guess. Test. We are so confident in our Only Imaging ribbons that we encourage you to try to destroy them.
