Printing a barcode on a paper shipping label is easy. Printing a barcode on a Nylon or Satin Taffeta care label that is about to go through an industrial washing machine? That is one of the toughest challenges in thermal transfer printing.
The apparel industry relies on these sewn-in tags not just for consumer care instructions, but for internal tracking, anti-counterfeiting, and inventory management.
The Client: A global denim and casual apparel manufacturer. The Issue: Before a pair of jeans or a jacket hits the retail shelf, it goes through intense industrial finishing processes like Stone Washing, Bleaching, or Enzyme Washing to achieve that “lived-in” feel.
The client’s factory in Southeast Asia was printing care labels using a generic textile resin. However, the harsh enzymes and high-temperature water (often exceeding 80°C) were dissolving the ink. When the garments exited the dryer, the barcodes were completely washed out, making it impossible to scan the items into inventory.
Textile ribbons require a very specific chemistry. A standard industrial resin won’t work because it isn’t designed to withstand harsh detergents or extreme agitation. The client’s generic ribbon lacked the necessary polymer cross-linking to bond permanently to the woven nylon fibers of the care tag.
We replaced their consumable with the Only Imaging D35 Washable Resin, a formulation engineered exclusively for the garment industry.
Extreme Resistance: The D35 is highly resistant to dry cleaning chemicals (Perchloroethylene), heavy industrial detergents, and enzyme washes.
Fiber Bonding: It is designed to penetrate and lock onto the fibers of Nylon, Polyester, and Satin Taffeta, rather than just sitting on the surface.
Ironing Tolerance: It withstands direct heat from industrial pressing irons up to 150°C without smudging onto the fabric.
The client ran the D35 printed labels through their most aggressive 2-hour heavy enzyme wash cycle.
Outcome: The text and barcodes emerged dark, crisp, and perfectly scannable.
Business Impact: The factory eliminated the bottleneck of manual data entry for “unscannable” garments, streamlining their global fulfillment process and drastically reducing chargebacks from retail partners.
In the apparel industry, a blank care label is a lost product. Ensure your tracking data survives the laundry room.
