Case Study: Stopping GHS Label Fading on Outdoor Chemical Drums

In the chemical industry, a missing or unreadable label is not just an inconvenience—it is a major safety violation and a massive liability. Globally Harmonized System (GHS) regulations require that hazard warnings remain perfectly legible from the moment a drum is filled until it is emptied or destroyed.

But what happens when those drums are stored outdoors?

The Problem: Sun-Bleached Danger

The Client: A regional manufacturer of industrial solvents and agricultural chemicals. The Issue: Due to limited indoor warehouse space, the client stored hundreds of filled, 55-gallon chemical drums in an outdoor holding yard.

After 6 to 8 months in direct sunlight, the black text and red GHS hazard diamonds on the labels were fading entirely to a pale grey. During a routine safety inspection, regulatory authorities cited the facility for non-compliance, threatening heavy fines and halting shipments until the inventory was properly re-labeled.

The Diagnosis: UV Photo-Degradation

The client was using a standard Wax/Resin ribbon on synthetic Polypropylene (PP) labels. While the PP label survived the rain, the ink did not survive the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight breaks down the chemical bonds in standard dyes and low-grade carbon black. Over time, the ink simply photo-degrades and vanishes.

The Solution: Only Imaging SP-500 UV-Resistant Resin

We immediately intervened and upgraded their printing operation to our SP-500 Ultra-Durable Resin.

  • UV-Stable Pigmentation: Unlike standard ribbons, the SP-500 utilizes highly stable, encapsulated carbon and color pigments that resist UV breakdown.

  • Weatherproof Bonding: Once printed, the resin fuses with the synthetic drum label, making it immune to rain, wind abrasion, and temperature fluctuations.

The Result

The client reprinted their drum labels and placed test batches back in the outdoor yard.

  • Outcome: After 12 months of direct sun, rain, and snow exposure, the SP-500 printed barcodes and text remained 100% scannable and visually stark black.

  • Business Impact: The company passed all subsequent safety audits, avoided the regulatory fines, and eliminated the massive labor cost of manually re-labeling sun-bleached drums.

Conclusion: Secure Your Outdoor Inventory

If your products live outside, you cannot use indoor consumables. Equip your logistics team with ink designed to fight the elements.
