When buying a thermal printer, the first spec you look at is DPI (Dots Per Inch).
203 DPI: Standard for shipping labels.
300 DPI: Standard for asset tags and small text.
600 DPI: Essential for micro-electronics and jewelry.
But did you know that changing your DPI might require changing your Ribbon?
At Only Imaging, we often see clients upgrade to a 600 DPI printer for better quality, only to be disappointed because they are still using a “Low-Res” ribbon.
Thermal printing works by heating tiny elements (dots) on the printhead.
At 203 DPI, the dots are large. The heat energy is broad. A standard Wax ribbon works fine here because the ink can “spread” slightly without ruining the barcode.
At 600 DPI, the dots are microscopic. You need surgical precision. If the ink spreads even a fraction of a millimeter (a phenomenon called “blooming”), your tiny QR code will blur together and become unreadable.
Recommended: Standard Wax or Standard Wax/Resin.
Why: The large barcodes on shipping labels don’t require high precision. You can prioritize cost and speed.
Recommended: Premium Wax/Resin (N809).
Why: At 300 DPI, text becomes sharper. A premium ribbon ensures that fonts as small as 8pt remain legible.
Recommended: Precision Resin (SP Series).
Why: You are likely printing 2D Datamatrix codes on 5mm labels. You need a Resin with “High Edge Definition.”
Only Imaging 600 DPI Resin is formulated with a thinner ink layer to transfer heat instantly with zero bleed, ensuring sharp edges even under a microscope.
Buying a 600 DPI printer and using a cheap generic ribbon is like putting low-octane gas in a race car. You won’t get the performance you paid for.
Match your ribbon grade to your printhead resolution.
