Toshiba TEC Ribbons: Why You Need “Near Edge” for B-SX & B-EX Series

If you own a Toshiba TEC industrial printer (such as the B-SX4, B-EX4T1, or the older B-472), you own a piece of unique engineering.

Unlike almost every other desktop printer brand, Toshiba TEC specializes in Near Edge (Floating Head) technology.

This is a critical distinction. We often get calls from panicked customers: “I bought a standard wax ribbon for my Toshiba printer, and the print is faint/missing!”

Here is why that happened, and what you actually need.

The “Near Edge” Difference

In a Toshiba Near Edge printhead, the heating elements are at the very edge of the ceramic plate, angled at 45 degrees.

  • The Contact Time: The ribbon touches the label for only a millisecond.

  • The Release: The ribbon must release the ink instantly after melting.

Why Standard Ribbons Fail

Standard “Flat Head” ribbons (used for Zebra/Sato) are designed to melt slowly and stay in contact longer. If you use them on a Toshiba Near Edge printer:

  1. Faint Print: The ink doesn’t have time to transfer.

  2. Ribbon Snapping: The ribbon sticks to the head because it doesn’t release fast enough.

The Solution: Only Imaging NET Series

You must use a specific Near Edge Wax/Resin or Near Edge Resin.

Only Imaging manufactures the NET (Near Edge Technology) series specifically for Toshiba TEC printers:

  • Instant Release Layer: Ensures crisp printing at speeds up to 12-14 IPS.

  • Back-Coating: Specialized to reduce friction on the angled printhead.

  • Compatibility: Drop-in replacement for Toshiba branded ribbons (like the AG2, AG4, or AS1 series).

Identifying Your Toshiba Model

Warning: Toshiba makes both types!

  • B-EX4T1: Uses Near Edge ribbons (The high-performance model).

  • B-EX4T2: Uses Flat Head ribbons (The economy model).

  • Check your manual or printhead. If it looks angled, it’s Near Edge.

Conclusion: Feed It the Right Fuel

Toshiba printers are built for speed and precision. Feeding them the wrong ribbon is like putting diesel in a Ferrari.

Ensure you are ordering Near Edge (NET) ribbons for your B-EX4T1 or B-SX series.
