Livestock Ear Tags: Printing on TPU for Long-Term Identification
In modern agriculture, traceability is law. Every cow, sheep, or pig needs an ID tag (often RFID enabled) for health tracking and export compliance.
These tags are typically made of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) because it is flexible and durable.
However, printing on TPU is notoriously difficult.
-
The Environment: The tag stays on the animal 24/7, exposed to UV sun, rain, mud, and manure.
-
The Behavior: Cattle rub their heads against fences and trees. This constant friction acts like sandpaper.
If the number fades, the farmer loses the animal’s history.
Why Laser isn’t the Only Way
While some tags are Laser Engraved, many farms and regional distributors use Thermal Transfer Printers to print variable data (like specific birth dates) on demand.
For this, you need Only Imaging’s “TPU-Grade” Resin.
The Secret: Chemical Penetration
Standard ribbons sit on top of the plastic. Our Livestock Resin is formulated to slightly penetrate the TPU surface when heated. It creates a semi-permanent tattoo on the tag.
Durability Checklist
-
UV Resistance: 5+ years readability rating outdoors.
-
Scratch Resistance: Can withstand repeated rubbing against wire fences.
-
Chemical Resistance: Resistant to veterinary medicines and dips.
Cost vs. Laser
Thermal transfer printing offers flexibility. You can buy blank yellow tags and print whatever you need instantly, rather than waiting weeks for pre-lasered tags from a factory.
Conclusion: Tags That Last a Lifetime
Farming is hard enough without worrying about lost data. Ensure your herd is identified clearly, year after year.
Printing on TPU Ear Tags? You need a specific formulation. Standard resin will scratch off.
