Navigating MOQs: How We Scale Thermal Ribbons for Your Business

In global B2B procurement, the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) is often the first hurdle between a buyer and a manufacturer. Procurement managers want to keep inventory lean, while factories need scale to keep prices low.

At Only Imaging, we believe in transparency. If you are considering transitioning your thermal transfer ribbon supply chain to our facility, here is exactly how our MOQ structures work and how we design them to support your business growth.

Why Do MOQs Exist in Thermal Ribbon Manufacturing?

To understand MOQs, you have to understand the manufacturing process. We produce thermal ribbons in massive “Master Jumbo Rolls” that are thousands of meters long. To fulfill an order, we must move these jumbo rolls to slitting machines to cut them to your requested width (e.g., 110mm, 80mm) and length (e.g., 300m, 450m).

Setting up a slitting machine—adjusting the blade tension, aligning the cores, and running calibration tests—takes time and generates setup waste. The MOQ exists to absorb this setup cost so we can offer you the lowest possible price per roll.

1. Standard Sizes (Low MOQ)

If you are purchasing standard industry sizes (such as 110mm x 300m on a 1-inch core) in our standard Only Imaging brand, the MOQ is exceptionally low. Because our slitting lines run these configurations daily, we group orders together, passing the setup savings directly to you. This is ideal for testing our quality or supporting smaller regional warehouses.

2. Custom Widths and Slitting (Medium MOQ)

If you require a highly specific width—such as 104mm to eliminate trim waste on a 4-inch label—this requires a dedicated machine setup. The MOQ for custom slitting is moderately higher, typically calculated based on the yield of one or two Master Jumbo Rolls.

3. OEM and Private Labeling (High MOQ)

When you utilize our OEM services (custom branded boxes, your logo printed inside the plastic core, specific shrink wrapping), the MOQ increases. This is dictated not by the ribbon, but by the packaging suppliers. Printing custom cardboard boxes and branded cores requires minimum volume commitments to be economically viable.

The Trial Program

We never expect a new client to commit to a full shipping container blindly. We offer a structured sample testing program. You can request specific sample rolls to test on your actual production lines before negotiating volume contracts.

Conclusion: A Phased Approach

We don’t just demand large orders; we build pathways to them. Start with samples, move to standard sizes to verify logistics, and scale into custom OEM programs when you are ready to dominate your market.
