Thermal transfer ribbon knowledge: from beginner to expert

Thermal Transfer Ribbon (TTR), also known as hot stamping ribbon or simply ribbon, is a type of printer consumable. It consists of a polyester or other high-density thin film coated on one side with wax-based, resin-based, or a wax-resin mixed ink. The reverse side is coated with a lubricant to prevent wear and damage to the printhead. Ribbon cores are commonly made of paper or plastic, and they must be resistant to deformation and slippage during printing.

The most common types of ribbons include wax-based, wax-resin, and resin-based ribbons. In China, widely used ribbons include date coding ribbons, infusion bag ribbons, fabric care label ribbons (resin-based), cable marking ribbons, barcode ribbons, wax-based ribbons, wax-resin mixed ribbons, and resin-based ribbons, among other models. Different materials and types of ribbons are suited for various printing materials and printers, with the performance of the printer being a key factor in thermal transfer technology.

Basic Composition:
(a) A thin and durable base film made of polyester or other high-density materials;
(b) A primer coating on the surface of the base film to ensure uniform ink coverage and complete ink transfer during printing;
(c) An ink layer made of wax, resin, or a wax-resin blend;
(d) An overcoat on the ink layer to protect the ink and enhance adhesion to the substrate during printing;
(e) A backcoat on the reverse side of the base film to prevent static buildup, distribute heat evenly, and reduce friction, thereby protecting the printhead.

Types and Models
To meet varying substrate and durability requirements, thermal transfer ribbons can be categorized into three types based on coating material: wax-based, wax-resin hybrid, and resin-based.

(a) Wax-Based:
Typically characterized by high density and sensitivity, wax-based ribbons are ideal for paper labels, offering excellent print quality at an economical cost.

  • General-purpose wax-based thermal transfer ribbons are compatible with most thermal transfer printers. Even with low energy consumption, these high-sensitivity ribbons deliver excellent print density and clarity.
    • Printing speed: up to 200 mm/s.
    • Heat resistance: 100°C.
    • Printing materials: coated paper, copperplate paper.
    • Melting point: 65°C.
  • Enhanced wax-based thermal transfer ribbons support higher printing speeds of up to 250 mm/s, with a melting point of 80°C.

(b) Wax-Resin Hybrid:
Combining high-quality print performance with durability, wax-resin ribbons are widely used and offer excellent value.

  • Wax-resin hybrid ribbons feature high sensitivity, consuming less energy and extending printhead life.
    • Heat resistance: 100°C.
    • Printing speed: up to 250 mm/s.
    • Printing materials: coated paper, copperplate paper, PVC, PET, PE, PP.
    • Melting point: 75°C.
  • Edge-enhanced wax-resin hybrid ribbons are designed for edge-type printers. They are compatible with various label papers and offer smudge-proof and scratch-resistant properties.
    • Printing speed: up to 300 mm/s.
    • Melting point: 80°C.

(c) Resin-Based:
Resin-based ribbons provide the highest durability, offering resistance to abrasion, heat, and chemicals. Some formulations are designed to withstand steam pressure, while others are suitable for washing or dry-cleaning.

  • Enhanced resin-based thermal transfer ribbons are designed for flat-head printers. They deliver a resolution of 200 DPI to 300 DPI with low energy consumption.
    • Heat resistance: 100°C.
    • Printing speed: up to 200 mm/s.
    • Printing materials: PVC, PET, PE, PP.
    • Melting point: 80°C.
  • Edge-enhanced resin-based ribbons are suitable for edge-type printers. Their unique backcoat technology allows for flexible printing, even at a 90-degree rotation.
    • Heat resistance: 180°C.
    • Printing speed: up to 200 mm/s.
    • Melting point: 80°C.
  • Specifications

    The specifications of thermal transfer ribbons are expressed as width (mm) × length (m), where width is measured in millimeters (mm) and length in meters (m).

    • Standard Widths: 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 130, 170 mm
    • Standard Lengths: 74, 90, 300, 450, 600 m
