Near-Edge vs. Flat Head: Optimizing Ribbons for TTO Packaging

In the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, efficiency is everything. Instead of printing and applying a physical paper label to a product, food and medical manufacturers are increasingly using Thermal Transfer Overprinters (TTO).

TTO machines integrate directly into packaging lines, printing lot numbers, expiration dates, and barcodes directly onto flexible plastic films, snack bags, and medical pouches.

However, many procurement managers make a critical mistake when sourcing consumables for these machines: they attempt to use standard thermal transfer ribbons. TTO machines utilize Near-Edge (or Corner Edge) printheads, requiring a fundamentally different ink chemistry.

The Mechanical Difference

The Traditional Flat Head Printer

In a standard desktop or industrial printer (like a standard Zebra or Datamax), the printhead lies flat. The ribbon and the label substrate pass under the heating elements together, remaining in contact for a brief distance after the heat is applied. This allows standard Wax or Resin inks a fraction of a second to cool and bond to the label before the ribbon is peeled away.

The Near-Edge (TTO) Printer

In machines manufactured by Videojet, Markem-Imaje, or Domino, the heating elements are located at the extreme edge of the printhead angled against a roller. The ribbon and the flexible packaging film touch the heat and instantly separate. There is zero cooling time.

Why Standard Ribbons Fail on TTO

If you load a standard Flat Head ribbon into a Near-Edge printer, the ink will not transfer. Because the ribbon is peeled away immediately, the standard ink polymer does not have time to release from its PET carrier. You will get blank prints, faint gray smudges, and massive downtime.

The Only Imaging Near-Edge Formulation

To operate a TTO line, you must use specialized Near-Edge Wax/Resin or Resin ribbons.

Only Imaging manufactures a dedicated TTO Series engineered specifically for high-speed instant release.

  • Instantaneous Ink Drop: Our Near-Edge formulations use a highly sensitive release layer. The millisecond the heat activates, the ink drops completely onto the flexible film, ensuring a dark, crisp barcode even when the printhead separates instantly.

  • Broad Substrate Compatibility: The ink is formulated to bite into difficult flexible packaging materials, including thin Polypropylene (BOPP), Nylon, and medical-grade Tyvek pouches, resisting the friction of downstream automated packaging arms.

Conclusion: Match the Chemistry to the Hardware

High-speed packaging lines require high-speed chemistry. Ensure your consumables are properly engineered for your TTO hardware to prevent costly bottlenecks in your packaging process.
