HS Code Guide for Thermal Transfer Ribbons: Avoiding Customs Delays

If you are importing Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR) for the first time, the Customs Broker will ask you one question: “What is the HS Code?”

Giving the wrong answer can be expensive. It can lead to:

  • Overpaying import duties (Tariffs).

  • Shipments being held for inspection.

  • Accusations of “Misclassification” (Fraud).

As an experienced exporter, Only Imaging helps our clients navigate this every day. Here is the definitive guide.

The Correct Code: 9612.10

For the vast majority of countries, finished Thermal Transfer Ribbons fall under: HS Code: 9612.10

  • Description: “Typewriter or similar ribbons, inked or otherwise prepared for giving impressions…”

  • Why: Even though TTR is high-tech, it is legally classified alongside old-school typewriter ribbons because its function is to “transfer ink.”

The Confusion: 3702 (Photographic Film)

Sometimes, inexperienced brokers try to classify TTR under Chapter 37 (Photographic or Cinematographic Goods), specifically 3702.

  • Why: Because TTR looks like a roll of film (PET base).

  • The Danger: Chapter 37 often attracts different duty rates or anti-dumping checks. Do not use this code unless your local customs authority specifically rules otherwise. TTR is not light-sensitive photographic film.

Jumbo Rolls vs. Slitted Rolls

Does the code change if you buy Jumbo Rolls? Usually, No. It is still 9612.10 (“Ribbons… prepared for giving impressions”). However, in some specific jurisdictions, wide rolls might fall under Plastic Film (3920.62 – PET) if they are not yet considered “Ready for Retail.”

  • Advice: Always check with us before shipping Jumbos. We can provide the technical description to satisfy your local customs agent.

Certificate of Origin (COO)

To reduce your import duties, we can provide:

  • Form E (For ASEAN countries).

  • RCEP Certificate.

  • Certificate of Origin (General).

Conclusion: Clearance Made Easy

International trade shouldn’t be a gamble. Partner with a manufacturer who knows the paperwork as well as the product.
