The “Diagonal Nightmare”: How to Fix Ribbon Wrinkling

You are printing a perfect black label, and suddenly—a sharp, white diagonal line cuts right through your barcode.

This is Ribbon Wrinkling.

It happens when the ribbon folds over itself as it passes under the printhead. Since the folded part is double-thick, heat can’t get through, leaving a white streak (Void).

This is a scary problem because it makes barcodes unreadable. But it is solvable.

Step 1: Check the Ribbon Loading

Is the ribbon loaded squarely? If you taped it onto the take-up spindle crookedly, it will pull unevenly and wrinkle.

  • Fix: Re-tape the ribbon to the take-up core. Make sure it is perfectly centered and flat.

Step 2: Adjust the “Strip Plate” (Ribbon Bar)

On printers like the Zebra ZT410, there is a silver metal bar (Strip Plate) just above the printhead. It usually has two screws or knobs.

  • The Physics: This bar controls the angle at which the ribbon enters the printhead.

  • The Fix: Adjust the plate slightly. If the ribbon wrinkles from the inside out, tilt the bar the opposite way until the ribbon pulls flat.

Step 3: Uneven Printhead Pressure

If you are printing on a narrow label (e.g., 2 inches wide) but your printhead pressure toggles are set for a 4-inch label, the printhead will be tilted.

  • The Fix: Move the pressure toggles. One should be centered over your label. The other should be moved inward to balance the force.

The Manufacturer’s Role: Winding Tension

Sometimes, the ribbon roll itself is the problem. If a factory winds a ribbon with uneven tension (loose on one side, tight on the other), it will always wrinkle, no matter what you do to the printer.

At Only Imaging, we use Automated Tension Control slitters. Every roll is wound with laser-measured precision to ensure it unspools perfectly flat.

Conclusion: Smooth Sailing

Wrinkles belong on raisins, not on your shipping labels.

If you have tried adjusting your printer and the wrinkle persists, throw the roll away. It’s a bad wind. Switch to a precision-slit brand.
