Printing for the Deep Freeze: Cryogenic Labels (-196°C)

Welcome to the coldest place in the supply chain. In biomedical research, IVF clinics, and stem cell banks, biological samples are stored in Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) at -196°C (-320°F).

At this temperature, physics changes. Standard label adhesives turn into glass and pop off the vial. Standard thermal transfer ink becomes so brittle that a simple touch will shatter the barcode into microscopic dust.

If you lose the label, you lose the sample. Decades of research can be wiped out by a bad ribbon.

The Anatomy of a Cryogenic Label

To survive liquid nitrogen, you need a specialized system:

  1. The Substrate: A specialized Cryo-Film (often Polypropylene) that remains flexible at -196°C and conforms to the tight curve of a 2ml vial.

  2. The Adhesive: A medical-grade cryogenic adhesive that cures instantly and does not freeze into a brittle state.

  3. The Ribbon: Only Imaging SP-500 (Ultra-Durable Resin).

Why Pure Resin is Mandatory

You cannot use Wax or Wax/Resin in a cryogenic environment.

  • Thermal Shock: When a vial is pulled from a -196°C liquid nitrogen dewar into a 20°C room, it experiences a massive thermal shock of over 200 degrees in seconds.

  • The Only Imaging Solution: Our SP-500 Resin is formulated with highly stable synthetic polymers. It does not micro-crack during thermal shock.

  • Chemical Bath: Before returning to the freezer, vials are often wiped down with harsh chemicals (like Isopropyl Alcohol or Bleach) to prevent cross-contamination. Our resin is chemically inert and survives these solvent wipes without smudging.

Print Quality on Micro-Vials

Cryogenic vials are tiny. You are often printing a 2D Datamatrix barcode that is only 4mm x 4mm.

  • Our SP-500 Resin provides flawless edge definition when printing at 600 DPI, ensuring the scanner reads the micro-code on the first try.
