Labeling for Cold Storage: Ribbons That Survive Sub-Zero (-20°C)

The cold chain is unforgiving. Whether you are shipping frozen seafood, storing pharmaceutical vaccines at -80°C, or managing a blast freezer, your barcode labels face an extreme environment.

A common nightmare for cold storage managers is scanning a pallet, only to find the ink has flaked off the label, or worse, the label has completely fallen off the box.

To survive sub-zero temperatures, you need a specific combination of Label Material and Thermal Transfer Ribbon.

The Challenge: Frost and Condensation

When a product moves from a cold freezer to a loading dock, condensation (water droplets) forms instantly.

  • The Failure: If you use a standard paper label with a cheap Wax ribbon, the moisture turns the paper to mush, and the wax ink simply wipes away. Furthermore, at -20°C, cheap wax becomes highly brittle and micro-cracks.

The Solution: Synthetic Labels + Premium Wax/Resin

To win in the freezer, you must upgrade both components.

  1. The Label: Use a synthetic material like Polypropylene (PP) or Polyethylene (PE). It will not absorb water. More importantly, it must have a “Freezer-Grade” or “Deep-Freeze” adhesive designed to stick to frosted surfaces.

  2. The Ribbon: You need an Only Imaging Premium Wax/Resin (PW-R Series) or a General Resin.

    • Flexibility: Our Wax/Resin formulations maintain their elasticity at freezing temperatures, preventing the ink from cracking.

    • Moisture Resistance: The resin content ensures the barcode remains firmly bonded to the synthetic label, even when covered in frost or condensation during transition.

Application Tips for the Cold

  • Apply at Room Temperature: Whenever possible, apply the label to dry packaging before it goes into the freezer. The adhesive needs time to set.

  • If Applying Cold: Make sure you are using a specialized cold-temp adhesive label, and pair it with a ribbon that prints clearly at higher speeds to minimize ambient exposure time.

Conclusion: Don’t Freeze Your Supply Chain

Lost data in the cold chain means spoiled goods and rejected shipments. Equip your warehouse with consumables engineered for the chill.
