To the naked eye, a Thermal Transfer Ribbon looks like a simple sheet of thin black plastic.
But under a microscope, it is a complex sandwich of four distinct chemical layers. Each layer must be engineered perfectly to ensure the ribbon doesn’t snap, wrinkle, or flake.
As a manufacturer with 20+ coating lines, Only Imaging controls every layer of this stack.
This is the skeleton. We use high-grade Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) film, typically 4.5 microns thick.
Role: Provides tensile strength so the ribbon doesn’t snap under tension.
Quality Check: Low-quality PET stretches under heat, causing distorted barcodes.
(As discussed this morning). This sits on top of the PET, facing the printhead, to reduce friction and static.
This is the invisible glue between the PET and the Ink.
Role: It holds the ink in place during storage (so it doesn’t flake off) but releases it instantly when heated.
The Magic: In our Near Edge (NET) ribbons, this release layer is tuned to release in milliseconds for high-speed printing.
This is what you see on the label.
Wax: Carbon black + Wax binders (Low melting point).
Resin: Carbon black + Synthetic polymers (High melting point).
Top Coat: Some premium ribbons have an extra “Top Coat” on the ink to add scratch resistance after printing.
If you buy a ribbon and find black dust inside your printer, the manufacturer likely skipped the Primer Layer or used a poor binder. The ink is literally falling off the plastic before it even gets to the printhead.
Only Imaging ribbons are “Clean Room Coated.” We ensure the ink stays on the roll until you decide to print it.
Thermal transfer is not just mechanics; it’s chemistry.
When you source from Only Imaging, you are buying a sophisticated chemical product designed for performance, not just a commodity.
