Discover how Only Imaging provides professional TTR solutions to global partners.
In the aerospace, telecommunications, and server-farm industries, thousands of complex wires and cables must be perfectly organized. To identify them, technicians use Heat Shrink Tubing (Cable Markers).
A flat, flattened plastic tube is printed with a thermal transfer printer, slipped over the wire, and then blasted with a heat gun. The tube shrinks tightly around the wire, securing the identifier.
But this physical shrinking process creates a unique nightmare for barcode ink.
The Client: A major aerospace defense contractor wiring avionics panels for commercial jets. The Issue: The client was printing lot numbers and assembly codes onto flattened Polyolefin heat shrink tubes (with a 3:1 shrink ratio).
They were using a premium hard resin ribbon. It looked perfect when it came out of the printer. But the moment the technicians hit the tube with a 150°C heat gun, the tube shrank to one-third of its size. Because the generic resin ink was highly rigid, it couldn’t shrink with the plastic. The ink instantly cracked, shattered, and flaked off into a microscopic dust, leaving the wire completely unidentified.
Standard pure resins achieve their scratch resistance by being very hard and brittle. When the substrate underneath them undergoes massive physical deformation (like a 3:1 shrinkage), the brittle ink layer simply fractures.
We analyzed their Polyolefin tubing and deployed the Only Imaging SP-Cable Resin.
Micro-Elasticity: This highly specialized formulation contains elastic polymers. When the heat shrink tube contracts, the ink actually shrinks with the substrate without cracking or losing its structural integrity.
Smear-Proof After Heat: Unlike cheap wax/resins that might bend but will smear if you rub them while hot, the SP-Cable resin cures tightly during the shrinking process. Once cooled, it provides extreme resistance to aerospace cleaning solvents, hydraulic fluids, and physical abrasion.
Outcome: The defense contractor eliminated their labeling failures entirely. The printed text remained sharp, bold, and crack-free, even on the tightest 3:1 shrink applications.
Wire marking requires a delicate balance of flexibility and extreme durability. Ensure your cable markers remain legible for the lifespan of the hardware.
