Case Study: Preventing Contamination in Meat Packaging Labels

Food safety protocols are the strictest in the world. When packaging raw meat, poultry, or fresh produce, the materials used must not introduce any toxic chemicals or heavy metals into the food supply.

However, a common oversight in food processing plants is the “End-of-Line” labeling process. This case study highlights how a major food packer eliminated a hidden chemical migration risk by upgrading to certified printing supplies.

The Problem: The Risk of Ink Migration

The Client: A large-scale poultry processing facility. The Issue: The plant was using automated Print & Apply machines to stamp batch numbers, expiration dates, and barcodes directly onto the breathable, flexible plastic film that wrapped the fresh poultry.

During an internal HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) review, the quality assurance director realized they had no safety documentation for the generic wax/resin ink rolls being used in the printers. Because the plastic film was thin and breathable, there was a high risk of Ink Migration—where toxic plasticizers or heavy metals from cheap ink could seep through the plastic and contaminate the raw meat.

If health inspectors discovered this risk, it could trigger a catastrophic, multi-state food recall.

The Diagnosis: Uncertified Consumables

We reviewed the generic thermal transfer films they were using. As suspected, the supplier could not provide any Food Contact declarations. Many industrial-grade printing supplies use lead-based pigments or unregulated chemical binders to keep costs low. They are perfectly fine for a cardboard shipping box, but incredibly dangerous near fresh food.

The Solution: Only Imaging Food-Safe Series

We completely overhauled their end-of-line printing stations with our Food-Safe Wax/Resin Ink Rolls.

  • ISEGA Certified: Our formulation is rigorously tested by independent European laboratories (ISEGA) to confirm it is free from heavy metals, toxic solvents, and harmful phthalates.

  • Migration Compliant: It is certified safe for indirect food contact, ensuring that no harmful compounds will migrate through flexible packaging films.

  • Cold Environment Performance: The ink transfers crisply even in the 4°C refrigerated packaging room, preventing the barcodes from smudging on the condensation-covered plastic.

The Result

  • Outcome: The facility immediately passed their HACCP compliance audit with full documentation provided by our factory.

  • Business Impact: The QA director eliminated a massive blind spot in their food safety program, ensuring zero risk of chemical contamination and protecting the brand from devastating recalls.

Conclusion: Protect the Consumer

In the food and beverage industry, you cannot afford to guess what is inside your printing supplies. Demand transparency and certified safety declarations.
