If you manufacture and export hazardous chemicals (like industrial solvents, acids, or agricultural pesticides), you already know about GHS (Globally Harmonized System) labels.
But if those chemicals are shipped across the ocean, GHS is not enough. You must meet the British Standard: BS5609 (Marine Immersion Label Testing).
Why? Because if a cargo ship loses a container of hazardous chemical drums in the ocean, those drums might float for months. When they wash up on a beach, environmental agencies must be able to read the warning label to know exactly what is inside.
The BS5609 standard has different sections.
Section 2: Tests the blank label material and adhesive.
Section 3: Tests the Printed Ink (The Ribbon) on that specific label material.
To pass Section 3, the printed label is submerged in artificial seawater for 3 months, subjected to UV weathering, and then aggressively rubbed with a mixture of sand and water. If the barcode and hazard warnings are no longer legible, the combination fails.
You cannot use a “general purpose” resin for this application. The combination of salt, prolonged moisture, and UV light will break down standard ink binders, causing the text to wash away in the surf.
To achieve BS5609 Section 3 compliance, the ribbon must form an indestructible chemical bond with the synthetic drum label (typically Matte PET or specialized PP).
Only Imaging SP-500 Ultra-Resin is engineered specifically for these extreme maritime conditions.
It is highly resistant to saltwater degradation.
It withstands the abrasion of sand and physical impact.
Important Note: Compliance is based on the combination of our ribbon and your specific label stock. We can provide testing data and partner with your label converter to ensure your final printed drum label is 100% compliant.
Shipping non-compliant chemical drums internationally can result in massive fines, impounded cargo, and the loss of your export license. Equip your logistics team with the right resin.
