When procurement teams look at Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR), they usually check two things: Does it print black? And how much does it cost?
But they ignore the invisible layer that touches the most expensive part of their printer: The Printhead.
A replacement printhead for an industrial printer (like a Zebra ZT410 or Sato CL4NX) costs anywhere from $300 to $800. If you are replacing printheads every few months due to “dead pixels” (white lines through your barcodes), your ribbon is likely the culprit.
The secret lies in the Back-Coating.
A thermal ribbon is made of three main layers: The Ink, the PET base film, and the Back-Coating. The back-coating is a microscopic layer (often silicone-based) applied to the back of the PET film—the side that physically rubs against the heated printhead.
To offer a ribbon for $0.50 less, budget manufacturers skip or dilute the back-coating. Here is what happens inside your printer when you use them:
High Friction: The raw PET film drags across the microscopic glass resistors of the printhead at up to 14 inches per second.
Heat Buildup: This friction generates massive excess heat.
Burnout: The tiny resistors literally burn out. Once a resistor dies, it leaves a permanent white line through your labels, ruining your barcodes.
At Only Imaging, we view our ribbons as a protective shield for your hardware. Every grade we manufacture—from our Standard Wax to our Premium Resin—features an advanced Silicone-Based Back-Coating.
Low Coefficient of Friction: It acts as a dry lubricant, allowing the film to glide effortlessly over the printhead, even at maximum print speeds.
Heat Dissipation: It helps transfer heat efficiently from the printhead to the ink, meaning you can often print at a lower darkness setting.
Saving $50 a month on cheap ribbons isn’t a bargain if it costs you a $500 printhead replacement. Protect your hardware investment.
