You bought a year’s supply of Thermal Ribbons to get a bulk discount. Smart move. But if you store them in a hot, humid shed, that investment will turn into a total loss.
Thermal Transfer Ribbons are chemical products involving wax and resin. They are sensitive to the environment.
Here are the Golden Rules of Storage to ensure your Only Imaging ribbons last for their full 12-24 month shelf life.
Ideal Range: 5°C to 35°C (40°F – 95°F).
The Danger: Wax Ribbons have a low melting point. If you leave a box of wax ribbons in a car in summer, or next to a heater, the ink layers can fuse together (called “Blocking”). When you try to unwind the roll, the ink will stick to the back of the film, ruining it.
The Fix: Keep them in a climate-controlled warehouse. Never store them in direct sunlight.
Ideal Range: 20% to 80% Relative Humidity.
The Danger:
Too Dry: Static electricity builds up.
Too Wet: The cardboard cores can absorb moisture and swell/warp. A warped core won’t fit on the printer spindle.
Keep Vertical: Always store rolls standing up (vertical) inside the box.
Don’t Stack Too High: If you stack pallets 3-high, the weight can crush the cores of the bottom pallet.
Keep in Packaging: Don’t open the shrink wrap until you are ready to use the roll. The wrap protects against dust and moisture.
Wax: Typically 1 year.
Resin: Typically 2 years (more stable).
FIFO: Always use “First In, First Out” inventory management.
A damaged ribbon causes printer jams and bad barcodes. Treating your consumables with care ensures they run smoothly every time.
