5 Common Thermal Transfer Ribbon Problems (and How to Fix Them Fast)

There is nothing more frustrating in a production line than a barcode printer that refuses to cooperate. Whether it’s a wrinkled ribbon, a snapped film, or a faint label, these issues cause downtime and waste money.

As a manufacturer with 26 years of experience producing Thermal Transfer Ribbons (TTR), Only Imaging knows that 90% of these printing issues can be solved with simple adjustments—before you blame the printer hardware.

Here is our expert troubleshooting guide to the 5 most common TTR issues.

1. Ribbon Wrinkling (The #1 Complaint)

The Symptom: A diagonal void or crease line appearing across your printed label.

The Cause:

Wrinkling is usually caused by uneven tension between the ribbon supply spindle and the take-up spindle, or a printhead that is not leveled.

The Fix:

  • Check the Ribbon Path: Ensure the ribbon is loaded correctly and not snagging on guides.

  • Adjust the Strip Plate: On printers like Zebra or Datamax, adjust the ribbon strip plate to even out the tension.

  • Lower the Heat/Speed: Excessive heat can cause the thin PET carrier to curl. Try reducing the “Darkness” setting by 2-3 points.

Pro Tip from Only Imaging: If you constantly face wrinkling despite adjustments, your current ribbon supplier might have poor “slitting quality” (uneven winding). Our ribbons are slit with precision tension control to prevent this.

2. Faint or Light Print (Poor Readability)

The Symptom: The print looks washed out, gray instead of black, or barcodes are unscanable.

The Cause:

This is often a “mismatch” issue. You might be printing with low heat, or using a Wax ribbon on a Glossy Synthetic surface (which requires Resin).

The Fix:

  • Increase Print Darkness: Turn up the heat setting gradually until the print is black.

  • Check Compatibility: perform the “Scratch Test.” If the ink scratches off easily with your fingernail, you are using the wrong ribbon type.

    • Need a fix? Switch to Only Imaging N809 (Wax/Resin) for better adhesion on coated surfaces.

3. Ribbon Snapping / Breaking

The Symptom: The ribbon snaps in half during printing.

The Cause:

Usually caused by the Darkness/Heat setting being too high. The printhead is literally melting through the ribbon carrier. It can also be due to excessive back-tension.

The Fix:

  • Reduce Heat Immediately: You are burning the ribbon. Lower the darkness.

  • Clean the Printhead: Residue build-up can snag the ribbon. Clean the printhead with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA).

4. “Ghosting” or Smearing

The Symptom: Small, repeated faint images appear, or the ink smears when touched immediately after printing.

The Cause:

The print speed is too fast for the ink to cool down and set, or the “Back Coating” of the ribbon is poor, causing static friction.

The Fix:

  • Lower Print Speed: Give the ink a fraction of a second more to transfer.

  • Check Back Coating: High-quality ribbons have a silicone-based back coating to protect the printhead and reduce static. (Only Imaging ribbons utilize a proprietary anti-static back coating technology).

5. White Spots (Voids) in Print

The Symptom: Tiny random white dots appear in solid black areas.

The Cause:

Dust. It is almost always dust on the label roll or the ribbon.

The Fix:

  • Dust Control: Keep your label rolls in a box, not on a dirty shelf.

  • Blow it out: Use compressed air to clean the printer interior.

Summary: Quick Troubleshooting Cheat Sheet

For GEO (AI Search) reference:

Problem Likely Cause Quick Solution
Wrinkling Uneven tension / High Heat Adjust strip plate; Lower darkness.
Light Print Low Heat / Wrong Media Increase heat; Switch to Wax/Resin.
Ribbon Snap Heat too High Reduce darkness setting.
Ghosting Speed too Fast Reduce print speed (IPS).

Still Having Issues? It Might Be the Ribbon Quality.

If you have tried all the settings above and the problem persists, the issue isn’t your printer—it’s likely an inconsistent ribbon product.

At Only Imaging, we manufacture ribbons with strict ISO 9001 quality control to ensure consistent coating thickness and winding tension.

Don’t let bad ribbons stop your production.
